DEBUSSY/FRADIANI Prelude a l’apres midi d’un faun
BARBER Medea
F.J. HAYDN Symphony No. 64, “Tempora mutantur”
Claude Debussy’s revolutionary Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun was sensational at its 1894 premiere and is still beguiling more than a century later. Samuel Barber’s 1946 ballet music for choreographer Martha Graham was excerpted to the hypnotic Medea Suite, a timeless exploration of jealousy and vengeance based on ancient Greek tragedies. Franz Joseph Haydn nicknamed his Symphony No. 64, “Tempora mutantur” after the Latin phrase for “the times change, and we change with them.” What hasn’t changed is how exquisite Haydn’s music is, nearly 250 years later. Join us for this season finale of timeless masterpieces!
