Aaron Copland’s distinctive style captures a flavor of Americana and the Suite from Appalachian Spring epitomizes his approach. With music that reflects our country’s broad expanse and the many stories that contributed to its creation, Copland is often called “the dean of American composers.” Representing new generations while reflecting on the past, Oklahoma composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate has embraced his Chickasaw heritage, writing music inspired by American Indian culture and leading the way for Native voices. Shakamaxon is a remembrance of the historic 1682 treaty between William Penn and the Lenape tribe, evoking the location as well as the competitive moccasin games enjoyed by the Lenape people.
